Tanzania Travel Guide

The main international road crossings into Tanzania are from Kenya. The most used is the border crossing at Namanga, about halfway between Nairobi and Arusha. The other principle border crossing is south of Mombasa on the coast at Lunga Lunga, from where the nearest large Tanzanian town is Tanga. There are quieter border crossings at Taveta, between Voi and Moshi, and Isebania on the main road between Kisumu and Mwanza.

Kilimanjaro Airport

Kilimanjaro International Airport is the primary gateway for travelers arriving in northern Tanzania for Mount Kilimanjaro climbs, wildlife safaris, and cultural tours. Conveniently located approximately 40 minutes by road from Moshi and Arusha, the airport provides easy access to the main tourism hubs of the Northern Circuit. The airport offers a straightforward arrival and departure process, modern facilities, and essential traveler services. Whether you are beginning your Kilimanjaro adventure or concluding a safari experience, Kilimanjaro International Airport ensures a smooth transition into and out of Tanzania.

Visa and Documents

It is possible to get your visa at the border going into Tanzania or at the Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airports when you arrive. Allow extra time for this process. You will need US$100 cash if you are a U.S. citizen or US$50 cash for all other nationals. Alternatively, you can get your visa ahead of time. U.S. Citizens get the visa application from the U.S. Tanzania Embassy website or call them in Washington D.C. at 202-939-6125, and ask for a visa application. Other nationalities check Tanzanian Embassies around the world for the nearest embassy. Allow 30 days for processing. You might want to consider sending it certified mail or Federal Express both directions to ensure the safety of your passport.
